Our History

The history of Access Capital is a story of terrific people working together for a long time to achieve high performance results. In addition to the members of the Management Committee named below are a significantly larger number of other terrific people whose regular contributions to the firm are extraordinary and appreciated.
Noteworthy Dates

  • December 1985 – Miles Stuchin and his wife Marcie, parents of Blake, 3 years, and Mallory, 3 months, decide to leave their jobs and go into business. Marcie had been a Vice President at Sotheby’s, the global auction house, and Miles was a law firm partner. With them is Donna Reichert, a law firm colleague of Miles since 1977.
  • February 1986 – With $5,000 of founders’ equity and a bank line of credit, Access Capital is incorporated as a business.
  • April 1, 1986 – Miles, Marcie and Donna open Access Capital for business on April Fools’ Day, in an apartment building Miles owns on West 87th Street.
  • May 1986 – Laura Devine visits to speak about leaving her job at Bank Leumi to create an Access Capital Credit Department. It’s concluded that the move would be premature but she should come again when Access is more seasoned and bigger.
  • November 1986 – Laura joins a more seasoned and bigger Access. Access expands, moving into a second apartment across the hall.
  • May 1987 – Maureen McGann leaves the Metropolitan Museum of Art to join us and start the Client Services Group. Access adds a third apartment.
  • February 1988 – Access Capital is now sprawled across two dozen rooms in five apartments on two floors, its computer and phone lines strung together out windows and across halls. It moves to the top floor of a converted bra factory on Madison Avenue and 37th Street.
  • March 1989 – Access is named by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as an attractive non-bank alternative source of financing.
  • October 1990 – Paul Mehring, formerly of Meritor Bank in Philadelphia, joins as a Business Development Officer.
  • 1991 – INC Magazine names us to the INC 500 list as the 114th fastest growing privately held company in the country.
  • 1991Fortune Magazine names Diagnostek, Inc., a company co-founded by Miles and in which he is a Director and Chairman of the Executive Committee, to the number 4 spot on the Fortune 100 list of the nation’s fastest growing public companies. That year, Diagnostek is the fastest growing company on the NYSE.
  • 1992 – Miles is named by Crain’s New York Business to its list of “40 Under 40” people to watch.
  • 1992 – Miles is named by Ernst & Young as an Entrepreneur of the Year.
  • 1992 – Paul Mehring is promoted to Senior Vice President and Head of Underwriting.
  • January 1993 – Vince Grillo, formerly of Chase Manhattan and Bank of New York, comes aboard to manage business development.
  • August 1993 – Access moves to its present location at 405 Park Avenue, at 54th Street.
  • May 1997 – With gains from successful venture capital deals, the Access Capital Foundation is organized as a not-for-profit trust to support healthcare, education and children’s welfare, in programs important to the people of Access Capital and our clients.
  • April 2000 – Angela Santi, formerly of GE Capital and CIT, joins Access Capital to create the Account Management Group.
  • March 2007 – The West 87th Street building where Access Capital got its start is sold to a global hedge fund; with a portion of our share of the proceeds, support for the Access Capital Foundation is increased.
  • January 2009 - Paul Mehring and Angela Santi are both promoted to Executive Vice President.  Vince Grillo is promoted to Senior Vice President.
  • July 2011 – The William J. Clinton Foundation, in partnership with UBS, launches a pilot program to increase domestic job creation through work with young entrepreneurs in high growth businesses.  Access Capital’s well developed expertise and long time success working with high growth entrepreneurs is recognized by the Clinton Foundation and UBS, and Miles is tapped as an advisor to the program.
  • May 2013 – John McGraw, a 20 year veteran of Sterling Payroll Finance (a division of Sterling National Bank), joins Access Capital as Senior Vice President.
  • Today – Miles, Marcie, Donna, Laura, Maureen, Paul, Vince, Angela and John continue their long-running performance leading a great group of talented and passionate individuals in partnership with business owners dedicated to growth and heightened levels of success. Over the years, as the roots have grown deeper the bonds have become more meaningful. And it just keeps getting better!
